How to deal with phone scams

The Hereford Rural North Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) at West Mercia Police has some very useful tips on how to deal with phone scams in their February 2018 update.  There’s also an update on local crimes – thieves are active in the county so ensure garages and outside sheds are securely locked.

It is a scam if ….

  • Someone offers you something
  • It seems too good to be true
  • You are pressurised into agreeing something quickly
  • You are asked to make a payment
  • You are asked to hand over your credit card details on a cold call

IF IT FEELS WRONG, IT IS WRONG … The fraudsters are very clever – their first job is to gain your
trust. They sound convincing, authoritative, and professional, and they may claim to be from your bank or an official government body. Don’t engage in a conversation with the scammer by trying to catch them out – the longer you stay on the phone the more chance they have of persuading you that they are genuine.
